The Molecular Medicine Research Center (MMRC) of biobank.cy, a Research and Innovation Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research of the University of Cyprus welcomes expression of interest for voluntary inclusion in a nationwide research programme aimed to the study of the Cypriot genome.

The MITOS-1 programme is part of a larger research project on the study of kidney diseases and aims at an in-depth analysis of the genome of Cypriots. Interesting DNA variants and mutations in the Cypriot genome that are responsible for various genetic diseases, rare or common, will be identified that will facilitate further diagnosis and treatment of each patient individually.

Determining the Cypriot DNA as a standard genome of reference, will be a useful tool for many future studies, both for kidney disease and other diseases, such as heart conditions, diabetes, etc. The DNA and personal medical history information will be kept in the University of Cyprus Biobank with full confidentiality.

The volunteers must be Cypriots, permanent residents of Cyprus, aged 30-70, healthy, who do not suffer from chronic diseases. When enrolling in the programme, they will be given details of the project’s objectives and specific guidelines, and they will be asked to sign a consent form approved by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee.

Anyone interested can contact MMRC to express their interest. They will be sent a consent form in order to be informed and requested to fill in. Then they will be invited to a personal meeting to be explained further details and to sign up for the programme, if they so wish.
