The Molecular Medicine Research Center of the University of Cyprus has one opening for a Special Scientist
funded by the research program: Center of Excellence in Research and Innovation – Biobanking and the
Cyprus Human Genome Project (CY-Biobank), which is co-funded by the European Commission, the Republic
of Cyprus, and the University of Cyprus.

Established in 2011, The Molecular Medicine Research Center (MMRC) was the first research center of the
University of Cyprus (UCY) that aspired and aimed at developing front-line research on human genetic
diseases and offer better prospects for diagnosis, prevention and therapy, in the framework of precision
medicine.

Requirements
• PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences
• Documented knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, experience in molecular diagnostic
techniques & methodology and ability to develop independent research and administrative work
Profile
• Strong background in Molecular Biology and good understanding of genetics
• The candidate should be creative, enthusiastic and passionate about research
Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on a project related to inherited heart conditions including
cardiomyopathies, with the use of human material and data, and expanding to the use of zebrafish (Danio
rerio) as a model to study DNA variants and their potential pathogenicity.
The project requires that the candidate has experience in working with zebrafish or will undergo training in
Athens, with a collaborative laboratory at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens
for a period of 4-6 weeks. Training will continue at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. The
candidate should be highly motivated to lead a new line of research and take initiatives to promote the
project.

The candidate should be alert of opportunities for external funding and submit research grant proposals for
supporting his/her research beyond the internal funding, in collaboration with the Director and other
colleagues.

Terms of employment
The position will be for full-time employment with a 2-year contract, and potential for renewal. The monthly
gross salary will be commensurate to qualifications and previous experience and ranges between €2500 and
€3500. There is no provision for a 13th salary.

At least the best three candidates that satisfy the required qualifications, will be interviewed by a 3-member
Committee.
