We aspire to further expand a contemporary Biobank at an island-wide level and establish a research environment aimed at precision medicine, motivated by our genuine care for human well-being. Key components are continuous education, research and innovation, aimed to serve the patients. The ultimate sacred purpose of the Center of Excellence is to make the link between the dramatic picture of the affected individual-the patient as a human macro-entity-and the patient as a molecular biological micro-entity. The next feat is the prevention or correction of the molecular malady through translational research and precision medicine.
We, the people at Center of Excellence (CoE) biobank.cy, aspire to create an upgraded research environment with the necessary tools to develop innovative front-line research in the field of genetic diseases and molecular medicine. With the combination of research instruments that include molecular genetics and biostatistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, we aim to make biobank.cy a major gate to new knowledge for improving human health. At the CoE we care about contributing to better diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of diseases, through promoting research, innovation and education, in a patient-centric approach. At biobank.cy we embrace our National dimension.
Centre of Excellence biobank.cy established the following Quality Policy and is committed to:
- Comply with ISO9001:2015 and continually improve the effectiveness of the Quality Management System
- Comply with all regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines in full transparency
- Ensure that the activities of the biobank.cy Centre of Excellence are structured and impartial
- Apply the principles of best practices for its Biobank as well as research and diagnostic activities
- Ensure all staff know about the Quality Management System and apply processes in line with standard methods
The Center of Excellence – General Information
The Biobank was created as a result of external competitive funding secured by Prof. C. Deltas and his colleagues, in the form of an infrastructure Strategic Program. The program was co-funded by the Regional Development Fund of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus through the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, with a total of €2mi and included the creation of the first Biobank in the country. This project was ranked first among 42 applications, in a 2-phase procedure. The Biobank was approved by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee in 2011 to operate for the next 25 years.
Further development of the Biobank came with the success in funding by the European Commission in the framework of program H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2018-2019: Teaming Phase 2, for €15mi for 7 years. The project is entitled: Biobanking and the Cyprus Human Genome Project. The project is supplemented by another €15mi by the Government of Cyprus and another €8mi by the University of Cyprus for a duration of 15 years, October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2034. It aims to upgrade the current infrastructure into a Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research.
“We invest in Biobanking, we invest in a healthier Cyprus!”
