Στο πλαίσιο της τήρησης των υποχρεώσεών μας σε σχέση με τις διατάξεις των Γενικών Κανονισμών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου για τα Κέντρα Αριστείας και τα Κέντρα Έρευνας του 1999, καθώς και στο πλαίσιο της προσπάθειας μας για σύσταση ενός κατεξοχήν διοικητικού σχήματος, το Κέντρο Αριστείας προχώρησε το 2020 στη σύνθεση 5-μελούς Ακαδημαϊκού Συμβουλίου.
Το Συμβούλιο είναι κυρίως επιφορτισμένο με τη λήψη αποφάσεων σε θέματα που άπτονται, μεταξύ άλλων, των επιστημονικών δραστηριοτήτων, του επιστημονικού προγραμματισμού, της ανάπτυξης της Βιοτράπεζας, της αντιμετώπισης των προκλήσεων περαιτέρω χρηματοδότησης και της ευρύτερης διεύθυνσης του Κέντρου.
Πρόεδρος του Ακαδημαϊκού Συμβουλίου είναι ο Διευθυντής του Κ.Α., ο οποίος είναι και ο επικεφαλής των καθημερινών δραστηριοτήτων του Κέντρου. Ο Διευθυντής διορίζεται από τη Σύγκλητο του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου για μια περίοδο πέντε ετών (με δυνατότητα ανανέωσης), σύμφωνα και με τους κανονισμούς οι οποίοι έχουν οριστεί από τη Σύγκλητο και εγκρίθηκαν στη συνέχεια από το Συμβούλιο του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου.
Το Ακαδημαϊκό Συμβούλιο του Κ.Α. συνέρχεται κάθε τέσσερις μήνες (ή και πιο συχνά εφόσον είναι απαραίτητο) και συνεδριάζει βάσει ημερησίας διάταξης την οποία εισηγείται ο Διευθυντής του Κ.Α. πριν από κάθε συνάντηση.
Το Ακαδημαϊκό Συμβούλιο υποβάλλει επίσης, τον ετήσιο προϋπολογισμό του Κ.Α. στη Σύγκλητο του Πανεπιστημίου. Μαζί με τον προϋπολογισμό, το Κέντρο προετοιμάζει και υποβάλλει στη Σύγκλητο μια ετήσια έκθεση, περιγράφοντας τις δραστηριότητες του προηγούμενου έτους, περιλαμβανομένων εσόδων και εξόδων του Κέντρου.
Στο μεταξύ, κατά τη διάρκεια του Έργου CY-Biobank, παρόμοιες εκθέσεις υποβάλλονται στις Υπηρεσίες Έρευνας και Προϋπολογισμού του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, καθώς και στο Υφυπουργείο Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας και Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής της Κύπρου.
Οι δραστηριότητες του Κ.Α. αξιολογούνται έξι μήνες πριν από τη λήξη της πενταετούς θητείας του Διευθυντή του Κέντρου, πάνω στη βάση κριτηρίων τα οποία ορίζονται από τη Σύγκλητο και στη συνέχεια λαμβάνεται απόφαση σε σχέση με τις τρέχουσες δραστηριότητες του Κέντρου.
Τα μέλη του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου οι οποίοι εργάζονται σε ερευνητικά προγράμματα του Κ.Α. έχουν τη δυνατότητα να παραστούν στις συνεδριάσεις του Ακαδημαϊκού Συμβουλίου ως παρατηρητές.

Prof. Stavros Gravas

Stavros Gravas is a Professor of Urology at the University of Cyprus and works in the Department of Urology at the Hospital of Nicosia since 2021.He completed the Fellowship of Endourological Society (2002) and he holds a PhD thesis from the University of Athens (2005) and a PhD thesis from the University of Amsterdam (2007).Dr. Gravas is the General Secretary of the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU). He was the Chairman of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines Working Group on Non-neurogenic male LUTS/BPO and contributed to the production of the EAU Patient Information Leaflet on Overactive Bladder, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Nocturia, providing reliable information to patients about urogenital diseases. He is a founding member of the Council of the Clinical Research Office of the Endourological Society (CROES) representing Europe.Dr. Gravas is a Consulting Editor of Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases and member of the Editorial Board of “European Urology Open Science” and “Asian Journal of Urology”. He also served as Section Editor of Journal of Endourology on New Technologies (2008 – 2020).He is author of 160 full-text publications in international, peer-reviewed journals (Pubmed-indexed) with more than 10150 citations and a h-index of 43.
Dr Gregory Papagregoriou
Senior Scientist / Group Lead, biobank.cy CoE
Dr Gregory Papagregoriou has a long interest in studying rare kidney diseases. His research is focused on ADTKD-MUC1 a rare disease with high frequency in Cyprus, which he aspires to describe, identify robust biomarkers and therapeutic interventions.
Dr Papagregoriou is an expert biobanker and geneticist, while he oversees the Next-Generation Sequencing facility of the biobank.cy CoE. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cyprus, an MRes in Medical and Molecular Biosciences from the University of Newcastle and a BSc in Biology from the Aristotele’s University in Thessaloniki.The years following his PhD, Dr Papagregoriou was a PostDoctoral fellow at the Molecular Medicine Research Center at the University of Cyprus working on the modulation of podocyte gene expression during differentiation through miRNA involvement at the transcriptional level, while he had the opportunity to set up and run the first NGS system in Cyprus.He developed a series of diagnostic NGS panels, including bioinformatic analyses and variant annotation pipelines.Read More
Prof. Fofi Constantinidou

Fofi Constantinidou is Professor of Psychology & Director of Center for Applied Neuroscience, University of Cyprus. She is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist (US and Cyprus), a certified brain injury specialist (CBIS-ABIS) and a neurorehabilitation researcher. Prior to her return to Cyprus, she was Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Miami University, Ohio, USA. Fofi and her interdisciplinary team at the Neurocognitive Research Laboratory, Center for Applied Neuroscience (University of Cyprus) explore the neurophysiological substrates of neuropsychological disorders resulting from acquired brain conditions and the development of effective neurorehabilitation methodologies. Her research has been supported by competitive grants (>11m euros; 4.5m euros as Coordinator) from the National Institutes of Health, the European Union and the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation (RIF). Fofi holds various leadership positions in Cyprus, the US, and other European and International organizations and serves on several Advisory Boards. Read More
Dr Nikolas Dietis
Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, University of Cyprus
Nikolas Dietis is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Cyprus Medical School, with a 10-year track record in academia and 5-year professional experience in the pharmaceutical industry sector. He is the founder and Ηead of the Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory at UCY, which focuses on drug repurposing studies against molecular targets in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr Dietis is an EU-registered Expert in Pharmacology, a certified Research Evaluator of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation in Greece, a certified Quality Reviewer of Online Courses by Quality Matters (USA), a Speaker at the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance, and a registered Independent Evaluator at the Council of Recognition of Higher Qualifications (KYSATS). Prof. Paris A. Skourides Professor & Head of the Cell & Developmental Biology Laboratory
University of Cyprus, Department of Biological Sciences
Prof. Skourides earned his PhD from The Rockefeller University (1998–2004), where he investigated morphogenetic movements in Xenopus embryos and pioneered the use of biocompatible quantum dots for in vivo imaging. Earlier, he graduated summa cum laude in Biochemistry from Brandeis University as a Fulbright Scholar.Since joining UCY in 2005, he has led groundbreaking research to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanisms shaping vertebrate embryonic development, with particular focus on tissue morphogenesis and nanobiotechnology for advanced imaging. His lab employs quantum dot nanocrystals to visualize morphogenetic processes in vivo, aiming to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for developmental disorders. Prof. Skourides’ work has been featured in leading journals such as Science, Nature Communications, Cell Reports, and Development, and he has received the University of Cyprus Excellence in Research Award.
