There will soon be 1bn people living with high blood pressure (BP) around the world. At least half of these people do not know they have high BP; the proportion is even higher in developing nations. The World Health Organisation defines hypertension as the most important cardiovascular risk factor. The May Measurement Month Project for 2024 (MMM24) aims to highlight the size and importance of this global burden, to increase awareness and provision for better treatment of people with high BP. MMM24 is therefore a worldwide screening initiative aimed at highlighting the need for increased BP awareness. This initiative is organised by both the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) and the World Hypertension League (WDL), who are working together with volunteer health professionals to screen 25 million adults in more than 100 countries. The project was implemented for the first-time during 1-31 May 2017. The same will happen from May to July 2024. In Cyprus, as in other countries, adult volunteers will be invited to have their BP measured. Initiatives will include for example, gyms, pharmacies; almost any opportunity will be taken to invite ordinary members of the public to have their BP determined.
By examining as many people as possible and finding out just how big the problem is, we aim to demonstrate to governments across the world, why they need to raise public awareness and provide us all with better BP screening facilities and treatment. The principal research aim for this global study is to identify the burden of high BP around the world. Cyprus will be an important contributor to this important survey. The goal for MMM is to screen 25 million people worldwide.
The research has been approved by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee (File No: EEBK EP 2024.01.141). Participant recruitment will start in May 2024 and will be completed in July 2024. This timeframe is the same across all measurement sites worldwide.
The Lead organization of the action is May Measurement Month (charity number: 1196683) whilst the Founding organization is the International Society of Hypertension.
