Why Donate: Research for personalized medicine

Center of Excellence (CoE) biobank.cy is operating the first Biobank that was approved and is under continuous development at the University of Cyprus. It is destined to be a major national health resource, with the aim of supporting applied translational and basic research for improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a wide range of serious and life-threatening illnesses, including the rare monogenic and the more frequent complex conditions. The CoE’s researchers contributed in high quality and pioneering research during the past nearly 30 years in Cyprus, especially in the field of inherited renal diseases, but not only.

biobank.cy is inviting healthy volunteers and patients with any disease to enroll in the Biobank, as a medical research infrastructure, by consenting to provide some blood and medical information. The confidential and prudent use of this national health treasure is going to contribute in the development of several research studies that will result in better medical care for all patients currently and in the next generations.

Research of the last years revealed that in many cases, obtaining reliable results requires the analysis of high-quality data and samples from thousands of donors, especially in regards to the many frequent complex disorders, including cancer, diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular conditions, Alzheimer and other dementias, autism and autism spectrum disorders, to name a few.

Volunteers can enroll only after signing an informed consent form approved by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee.

Participation is free and citizens’ details are archived confidentially, protecting their personal data. The process takes approximately 40 minutes and each participant is sent free analyzes that include cardiovascular risk factors, diabetes and kidney function:
